It's been many moons since I first wrote about the City of Manitou Springs' attempt to get all the town's residents using a single trash/recycling hauler.

As I've said before, the city believes the plan will reduce noise and road wear, and be good for the environment.

Bestway Disposal, the only hauler to bid on the Manitou contract, appears to be on its way to being Manitou's trash company.

There's just one thing standing in the way: Process. Lots and lots and lots of process.

As Manitou Mayor Marc Snyder notes, nothing happens quickly in Manitou. Citizens must talk, express concerns, compromise.

This trash issue has been no exception. In fact, some tempers have flared.

“I’ve been called Hitler,” Snyder says. “I try to understand exactly how Hitler fits into a trash and recycling program, but ...”

On the bright side, Snyder says the vast majority of Manitoids have maintained a respectful attitude. And he thinks that the kinks with the program have been worked out.

Now, no one has to have trash service, but residents that get it will have to get Bestway. Commercial businesses, large apartment complexes and the city will not be required to hire Bestway. Senior citizens that are already getting a discount with Bestway will be allowed to keep their lower price.

“I really don't see any opposition remaining on the aspects of the program," Snyder says. "It's really come down to the people who disagree with the principle.”

Even so, Manitou has scheduled yet another work session on the trash program for April 27. Council plans to vote on the measure on May 4.
