Hot time for girls

Posted By on Fri, May 21, 2010 at 4:06 PM

If you're a teen girl from 15 to 19 and climbing aerial fire ladders in full bunker gear in the middle of summer sounds like a good time, and you're willing to pay $20 to do it, the Colorado Springs Fire Department wants you.

Taking summer camp to the next level.
  • Taking summer camp to the next level.

In a press release, the city says it's sponsoring Summer Heat 2010, an annual weeklong day camp in late July that will let the girls "try on" a career as a firefighter. This delightful and fun time is made even more enjoyable by donning heavy firefighting suits with breathing apparatus when the temperature rises into the 90s. Other thrills include vehicle extrication, search and rescue drills and working hose lines. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you can also look forward to an "ice breaking" confidence course. The camp concludes with a live fire exercise.

The press release didn't mention when a camp is planned for young men, or whether there is one at all. Maybe the young men don't need a camp.

"The (girls) camp is also committed to providing these young women with the prospect to develop leadership skills, community awareness and lasting friendships while broadening their problem solving abilities," the press release says.

Applications are due June 11 and are available here. Or request one by calling Cassie Beckey at 385-7244. Space is limited.
