Romanoff calling

Andrew Romanoff, former Colorado House speaker who's seeking the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, stopped in at his Colorado Springs headquarters yesterday to cheer on his troops and make some campaign calls.

Roughly 20 supporters were on hand to hear Romanoff say a few words of thanks and encouragement — and caution. He told his campaign workers to avoid negative counterattacks to the allegations being raised by his opponent, Michael Bennet, who was appointed to the seat by President Obama last year.

Romanoff said the party needs to remain cohesive going into the November general election, so he discouraged his backers from talking against Bennet. He also restated that he would support Bennet if he wins next week, and he hopes Bennet will support him if he wins.

He also joked about the Denver Post's headline declaring that polls show the two are in a virtual tie, when a recent poll shows Romanoff leading 48 percent to 45 percent. (The poll had a 4-percent margin for error.) He then said he wondered if the headline next week after he wins would say, "Romanoff second to last." The Post has endorsed Bennet. The Independent has endorsed Romanoff.
