Sugar-Coated Miracle on 42nd Street

It hasn't sparked the level of criticism surrounding the so-called "Mosque at Ground Zero" — which, by the way, isn't a mosque and isn't at ground zero — but New Yorkers were recently surprised to see a new edifice towering over one of the city's main tourist attractions.

Times Square is, of course, the Blade Runner-esque heart of New York City, a place where hookers and porn emporiums once held sway. (The porn shops have since been banished to less conspicuous locations, including the block where the controversial Islamic cultural center is expected to be located.)

Happily, Times Square is now home to Pop-Tarts World. The popular culture website Pop Matters recently visited the sugary mega-store to sample its exotic wares. Here's a sure favorite:

Pop-tarts sushi is not like any delicacy from the Far East. It is a concoction of chopped pastries inside a rainbow fruit roll-up wrap that’s sticky to the touch, sugary to the core. And prepared fresh by the chef.

Of course Pop-Tarts World may actually be a front for some terrorist cell with a sweet tooth, but there's no evidence of that. Yet.

Anyway, in the interest of whetting appetites and preserving our freedoms, here's some surveillance photos of this so-called "Pop-Tarts World."
