Here's your chance to flip the Air Force Academy the Bird.

The academy's mascot, a person in a blue fuzzy costume, is making a push to win the Capital One Bowl National Mascot Challenge 2010.

Here's how it works, according to an academy press release:

Each year Capital One sends out a call for nominations to all of the nation’s collegiate athletic programs. From a list of contenders, a panel of mascot aficionados chooses 16 talented mascots to be members of the Capital One All-America Mascot Team. Judging is based on how well the mascots interact with fans, originality and pedigree.

But being named an All-American is only the beginning. The 16 mascots are then embroiled in a fierce battle to claim the most coveted title in all the mascot land — Capital One National Mascot of the Year. The mascot with the most votes will take the title.

Voting consists of 12-week head- to-head matchups during regular season, followed by a three week playoff. Total votes will break any tie between mascots’ win-loss records. Fans can vote as many times as they choose. Vote online at or via text (standard messaging rates apply) by sending “the bird” or “thebird” to 69866.

This is the fifth appearance in the competition for the Bird and he is ready for a victory. This year he is up against some fierce and committed competitors ready to take the title, including two time Capital One Bowl Champion, Monte the Grizzly from the University of Montana, Ohio State University's Brutus, Louisiana State University's Mike the Tiger, University of Miami's Sebastian the duck, and the University of Oregon’s the Duck.

The Bird began the competition last week with a soaring victory over the University of Idaho’s Joe Vandal. This week he takes on Old Dominion University’s Big Blue who leads the pack with the most votes after the first week.

Voting for this week ends on Monday at 6:59 a.m. Mountain time. For a complete rundown of the mascots, standings, and rules, please visit;
