Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted By on Tue, Oct 5, 2010 at 7:33 AM

October is known for many things: Breast Cancer Awareness Month, GLBT History Month, National Depression Screening Day (Oct. 11). It's also Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

There are a handful of events going on throughout the month in which you can participate. TESSA, the local domestic violence and sexual assault advocacy agency, will host the annual Silent Witness event at noon on Friday, Oct. 15, at the Pioneers Museum. This event recognizes those who have lost their lives in our community due to domestic violence.

TESSA will also be the recipient of funds raised from the annual Beauty Brands "It Takes Guts to End Abuse" project. From now until Oct. 31, the store, located at 7214 N. Academy Blvd., will donate 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of every Redken Guts "volume-boosting spray foam." The product, which normally sells for $15.98, is available for just $7.98.

And new this year, Beauty Brands will also be selling "It Takes Guts to End Abuse" T-shirts for $20 — from which half the proceeds will also be donated.

According to a release from the store, Beauty Brands has taken on this issue because:

Most salon professionals know they’ll cut and color hair and offer advice on beauty and styling products. But some find their job also includes lending a listening ear to victims of domestic violence. Studies show that three out of four abused women tell someone about the abuse, and salons and spas may serve as “safe” places because abusers usually do not accompany victims to their appointments.
