City downgrades request for MMJ-related personnel

Recently, we reported that City Council was considering funding a team of three detectives in Metro Vice, Narcotics and Intelligence and a code enforcement officer, to help those departments with the increased workload resulting from a growing medical marijuana industry.

Having finalized its budget, Council has downgraded its request to one detective, and one code enforcement officer.

"Those changes were made, at my suggestion," writes City Councilor Sean Paige in an e-mail today. "While the city may need additional manpower to exercise adequate oversight, I think we need to ramp that up gradually and incrementally, so we're not using medical marijuana as a reason to pad the payroll, or adding more people than we need to do the job.

"The industry's footprint seems to be contracting at the moment, and until we see how it all shakes out, I want the city to proceed cautiously on staffing-up. I'm glad a majority of my colleagues agreed."
