MMJ supporter announces City Council candidacy

Daniel Freysinger — an electrician, the host of a local podcast that often speaks in support of medical marijuana and a 12-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force according to his filing — yesterday declared his candidacy for an at-large City Council seat.

"We have a long way to go in this city, and I thought it was about time that we had a different point of view presented on the City Council than is often the case," Freysinger says in a video announcing the move on his campaign website.

Also on the site is a monetary pledge to run his campaign on less than $100: "It is about time the people tell career politicians that their votes are not for sale. You can help by telling people about the campaign and directing them to this website."

Here's Freysinger's take on the local medical marijuana industry:

This has been a long fight for those people in the medical cannabis industry. And they have jumped through hoops; they have done everything that’s asked of them. And yet there’s still those who want to add more regulations on top of regulations and I just have to ask: How many layers of regulation do we need?

If medical marijuana is regulated at the state level, why do we waste city funds doing any kind of regulation at the city level? Allow Colorado to regulate and let’s get the city out of the business of regulating this industry.

This industry has proven that they are consistent and reliable. Like I’ve said, they’ve done everything that’s been asked of them, and the best thing that Colorado Springs can do is get off their back. Leave ‘em alone, allow them to operate; allow the market to make the adjustments to this industry. This is a fledgling industry and it’s gonna have some growing pains. But it’s amazing that if we just keep our hands off of it, that these things will work themselves out.

They’re jumping through enough hoops at the state level. We just don’t need to add more at the city level.
