Library lust

Posted By on Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 11:55 AM

How I love me a good library. I visit them whenever I'm in a new city. I like to see what's on their staff picks' shelves, what deals they have in their used bookstores, and, particularly in the bigger cities, how fancy they are.

So you can imagine my delight in this photo essay posted this week on Matador Trips about "Amazing Libraries Around the World," in honor of Library Lovers' Month.

It kicks off in Salt Lake City:

And just gets more massive and gorgeous from there. Think places such as Prague, Copenhagen and Mexico City.

Now, don't get me wrong. I love our local libraries, too. They don't have to be massive. I've spent many hours reclining in a chair on the west side of the East Library, alternately looking between books and Pikes Peak. I adore passing by the library bunnies in the kids' department at Penrose. And I'm always impressed with how the Pikes Peak Library District generates new ways to get people to read.

The Adult Reading Program, which runs now through April 4, inspires those of us who participated in kids' reading programs growing up, to once again engage in a process by which reading gains you prizes. (I'm quite proud of my mugs from each year of the program!)

And new this coming Monday, Feb. 14, is the ultra-cool Library Express Facility. In a format much like a snack vending machine, Library Express offers up calorie-free brain food. The non-staffed kiosk full of books and DVDs will be placed at 3337 Cinema Point, in the First & Main Town Center, in an underserved area of the city.

You must have a library card to check anything out, but once you have, you can return the items to the kiosk or to any library in the district.

PPLD says it hopes to have nine similar machines placed around the city by 2030.
