Commissioners take on D.C.

Don't trouble yourself to show up for any El Paso County commissioner meetings this week. There won't be any.

Four out of five commissioners have flown the coop for Washington, D.C., to attend the National Association of Counties meeting.

The only one staying home is newly elected Darryl Glenn, who resigned his City Council post to take a commission seat after being elected last fall.

Sallie Clark reported in today about the meetings, saying they had heard the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen speak, and were facing a flurry of other meetings ranging from human services to law enforcement.

Last week, commissioners held a "double meeting" on Thursday to compensate for their absences this week, and they'll hold another such double whammy March 15.

In 2009, commissioners promised to sharply curtail their travel expenses. The trips to Washington usually cost more than $1,000 each, including flights, hotels, meals and meeting registrations.

Commissioner Dennis Hisey is attending as a board member for Colorado Counties, Inc.

Commissioners also have scheduled meetings to talk with Sens. Michael Bennett and Mark Udall and Reps. Doug Lamborn and Scott Tipton.
