Post-election fallout: Progressives find more reasons to celebrate

Local progressives celebrating the political demise of Sean Paige and Douglas Bruce got more reasons to be cheerful this afternoon.

On a national level, there’s the news that Glenn Beck will be crying less in public, now that he and FOX have officially announced that they'll be pulling the plug on his weekday afternoon show sometime later this year.

Of more immediate importance, though, is the latest installment in the saga of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker’s attack on labor rights. Following in the wake of what have been pretty much the largest populist demonstrations this side of Egypt, a closely watched judicial race appears to have turned in favor of progressives.

Reports this afternoon indicate that Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice David Prosser has lost to the relatively liberal JoAnne Kloppenburg by a couple hundred votes, which is a slim enough margin to virtually guarantee a recount.

The ultimate outcome is likely to have national ramifications, given the fact that the victor will most likely determine whether Walker’s union-busting maneuvers get rubber-stamped by the state judiciary. And that, of course, will have major implications for working people throughout the country.

All in all, not a bad 24-hour news cycle.
