New leader for NorthCom and NORAD reportedly chosen

Stars and Stripes reports that Lt. Gen. Charles “Chuck” Jacoby, who served as a top deputy to Iraq War commander Gen. Ray Odierno, has been nominated for a fourth star and to assume command of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command based at Peterson Air Force Base.

The newspaper reports that a Senate hearing schedule announcement e-mailed to reporters Tuesday "apparently has scooped the White House and Pentagon in revealing that Jacoby was nominated Monday to replace Adm. James 'Sandy' Winnefeld, Jr."

Winnefeld has been commander since May 2010 and is awaiting confirmation to be vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

According to Stars and Stripes:

If confirmed, Jacoby, like Winnefeld, would go to NORTHCOM and NORAD directly from serving as the Pentagon’s “J-5,” or director for Strategic Plans and Policy. Jacoby gained wider recognition (and an appearance on “the Colbert Report”) as the former commanding general of Multi-National Corps-Iraq, and his bio includes a stint as a West Point history professor, where one of his three sons is a cadet.

The confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee is set for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, along with Adm. Jonathan Greenert, vice chief of naval operations, the president’s nominee to be the next chief of naval operations.
