USA Pro Cycling Challenge Tour Tracker hits big numbers

A press release from the USA Pro Cycling Challenge offices today further confirms co-chair Shawn Hunter's assertion that the inaugural race garnered wide attention.

In addition to what those of us on the street saw in terms of participation at Colorado Springs' prologue, the Pro Challenge folks say that during the event, the Tour Tracker — the free online feed and mobile app which broadcast live coverage of the race — made it to the Top 10 of most popular sports downloads, ranking at 7th on iPhones and 4th on iPads, as well as 37th on Androids.

According to their numbers, 24,000 unique users downloaded it.

Also, the Pro Challenge group reports that 127,000 unique users visited the group's website.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge and Tour Tracker® Set New Standard for Race Coverage

Top 10 Most Popular Sports Download for iPods and iPads

DENVER, COLORADO (September 2, 2011) - In partnership with Tour Tracker LLC , the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge set a new record for online and mobile event coverage. The Tour Tracker® applications, developed specifically for the USA Pro Cycling Challenge and sponsored by Radio Shack, were available to cycling fans around the globe as a free download. Over 24,000 unique users downloaded the Tour Tracker across all mobile devices, rocketing it to high rankings in the Apple and Android app stores, while 127,000 unique users accessed it via the website. In total, 151,000 unique users accessed Tour Tracker on all platforms with over 581,000 launches altogether, making it one of the largest audiences to download Tour Tracker for a cycling event ever, besting even the latest edition of the Amgen Tour of California.

Tour Tracker was also available to fans online at All versions of Tour Tracker, mobile and web-based, featured live video coupled with unprecedented real time data presentation, including stats and standing of each rider. A special highlight for Tour Tracker users was the ability to monitor the live heart rate, power output, speed and pedaling cadence of 25 riders on each stage.

Viewers were also treated to detailed live status reports on the race situation. At any time Tour Tracker users could see the full situation on the road including immediate break-away reporting, time gaps, speed and road gradient. Fans viewing the race in person were able to use Tour Tracker’s integrated GPS tracking to monitor race progress on the detailed course map and anticipate the exact arrival time at their viewing point.

Tour Tracker adoption set a new benchmark for domestic bike racing app popularity. Over the course of the seven-day stage race, Tour Tracker use propelled the app into the top 10 most popular sports downloads on both the iPod and iPad platforms. The Android version of Tour Tracker broke into the top 50 climbing as high as 37th.

For seven consecutive days, 135 of the world’s top athletes raced across 518 miles through the majestic Rockies, reaching higher altitudes than they ever had to endure, more than two miles in elevation. It featured the best of the best in professional cycling, competing on a challenging course through some of America’s most beautiful scenery, including cities such as Aspen, Vail, Breckenridge and Steamboat Springs.

Referred to as “America’s Race” the inaugural USA Pro Cycling Challenge took place August 22-28, 2011. Nearly 1 million spectators viewed this race from the roadsides along the route while more than 25 million watched the race on television in 161 countries and territories, including NBC and Versus. The USA Pro Cycling Challenge was one of the largest cycling events in United States history.

Spectators of the race saw Olympians, World Champions and the Tour de France podium winners Cadel Evans, Andy Schleck and Frank Schleck. On the final day, Levi Leipheimer of Team RadioShack was awarded the Quiznos Leader Jersey and crowned the first-ever champion of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge in front of a monumental crowd in downtown Denver. Elia Viviani took the Smashburger Sprint Jersey, Tejay Van Garderen the Sheets Best Young Rider Jersey, Rafael Montiel captured the Nissan King of the Mountain Jersey and the Exergy Most Aggressive Rider Jersey of the final stage went to Timmy Duggan.
