Not your rabbi's barbecue sauce ...

Posted By on Tue, Dec 6, 2011 at 4:08 PM

And from our "What's in Your Inbox?" series (just made that up, we don't actually have one), today the postman has brought us Bad Jew Kosher BBQ Sauce.

Hailing from Miami, Fla. and established in 5771 (that's 2010 to those unfamiliar with the Jewish calendar — less popular of course these days than the Mayan calendar), this sauce, they want you to know, is "Goy Tested/Rabbi Approved."

Yes, like all novelty items ripe for a givin' this holiday season, Bad Jew BBQ boasts many a fine one-liner on its merchandise, including "It takes a Bad Jew to make good BBQ" and "Now with 50 percent less guilt."

Choosy Jews choose the chosen peoples sauce ... hey, you dont have to put it on pork.

And of course on the label you've got a dude who looks sort of like Matisyahu but more like Joaquin Phoenix à la I'm Still Here or a lost Blues Brother, which is to say just a bad-ass Hasidic dude.

In the inspired spirit of fun, we tasted a little bit of the sauce and found it super black pepper heavy (which I like, but Bryce doesn't) and definitely on the vinegary, tangy side. My guess is those dominant qualities would be balanced a bit by a respective protein when mixed to the right proportion.

I won't know more, of course, until I do that. So for now, feel free to order some online yourself if you're curious, or looking for that perfect novelty gift for your ultra-reformed Jewish friend.

Like me.

I have plenty of times referred to myself as a "bad Jew" around the office, particularly when someone asks me a question about my religion that I should know the answer to but don't. (Like: "Why did you kill Christ?")

In some roundabout way, I feel as if I've somehow just done an endorsement for this product, but that wasn't my intention.

Remember, as the rules go with "What's in Your Inbox?", I was just sharing.
