Fire victims don't wait long for help

A house fire at 5195 Luster Drive left a family of four homeless yesterday.

But, it would seem, not for long. In the spirit of the season — and with a little help from our modern gadgetry — neighbors and do-gooders flooded the family with gifts almost immediately.

Colorado Springs Fire Department spokesperson Sunny Smaldino says she began sending out tweets and Facebook posts about the fire shortly after the department responded to the blaze. Within minutes, neighbors were on the scene with clothes and food.

Within an hour, someone had offered to give the family use of a furnished rental home.

"I've seen a lot of things happen immediately on social media," says Smaldino, who has about 1,600 Twitter followers. "But I haven't seen that outpouring of help."

"It made a big difference for that family," she added.

Fire Chief Rich Brown was equally impressed.

"To have that kind of fix that quickly," he said, "that's unheard of."
