City is farming out median mowing

Posted By on Wed, Mar 7, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Medians in the city's central area will get a weekly haircut through the spring, summer and fall under a request for proposals calling for bids by March 30.

The contract, with four one-year renewal options, would run from May 1 through Oct. 31 and cover mowing and trimming for irrigated medians only.

We submitted a few questions to the city's procurement department, such as what will become of the city's other medians, but haven't heard back. We'll update if or when we hear something.

Considering that gasoline prices are expected to explode in coming months, the city has included a provision through which the contractor can seek increased payments based on escalating fuel prices.

In a nod to the Colorado Springs Regional Economic Development Corp.'s "We Think Local" campaign, specifications call for giving local firms the edge, and small local firms at that.

The City of Colorado Springs has adopted a think local resolution to utilitize local service providers. In the spirit of that resolution this solicitation will award contracts to local Colorado Springs firms only.
It is the intent of this RFP to award a best value service contract for Median Mowing & Maintenance at various locations as indicated on Attachment VI, Group 8. Furthermore it is the City's intent to award the contract to a small Colorado Springs firm. A small Colorado Springs firm shall be specified as a firm with their principal place of business or an established office in Colorado Springs and shall not have more than twenty (20) employees.

Here's the attachment showing which medians will be included in this contract:

A pre-proposal conference is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at 1401 Recreation Way, the Parks Department building.
