This is the kind of news that reminds you that maybe the whole world may not, in fact, be going to hell.

The city of Fujiyoshida, Japan has donated $11,417 to Colorado Springs Together, a Waldo Canyon Fire relief organization. At Saturday's Mountain Festival in America the Beautiful Park, Fujiyoshida Mayor Shigero Horiuchi will present a check to Colorado Springs Mayor Steve Bach in a ceremony at 6 p.m.

According to a press release sent today by the city, the money was raised through a taiko drum group playing on a train platform for 30 minutes and raising awareness about the fire. "The campaign grew through donations from the mayor of Fujiyoshida, high school students, concerned individuals, and local organizations."

The release goes on to say that the Fujiyoshida delegation had planned to eat at the Flying W Ranch during their stay here: "'The moment the fire became ‘real’ was when we learned that the Flying W Ranch had burned, which was host to many of our fond memories,' said Robin Lawrentz, Coordinator for International Relations at Fujiyoshida City Hall."

Last year, the Japan Society of Southern Colorado donated $47,000 to relief efforts following the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
