Show preview: Phrames of Mind at Modbo

Posted By on Fri, Jan 4, 2013 at 3:18 PM

While straight-ahead jazz projects find their way into any number of venues around town, the Modbo has the market pretty much cornered on the genre’s more experimental expressions. And tonight’s performance by Glen Whitehead’s new project Phrames of Mind could be among the most intriguing.

A University of Colorado at Colorado Springs professor and principal trumpeter in the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, Whitehead will be joined by Jane Rigler (flute, electronics) Jay Baker (bass), Janet Feder (guitar) and David Mead (bass clarinet), along with visiting New York electronicist Doug Van Nort.

The show gets under way at 7:30 p.m., and we honestly can’t predict what it will sound like. Then again, the musicians themselves probably can’t tell you either, given the improvisational nature of what they do.

Still, the following videos should offer some hints. The first is of the Bottesini Project, with Whitehead performing alongside Denver saxman Paul Riola (who’s also played a number of Modbo engagements). The second is Van Nort serving up 20-plus minutes of electronic soundscapes.

Listen to them both at the same time, and you may get an idea of what’s in store for you tonight. Or maybe not. But the show will still be interesting.
