VIDEO: Stormwater projects do work

Posted By on Tue, Sep 24, 2013 at 9:10 AM

During City Council's discussion Monday of stormwater and how to deal with drainage needs, a short video was presented showing how a years-long project along Sand Creek held up during the recent floods.

Because of the installation of several drop structures, barriers comprised of rock and other material that slows water flows, the channel didn't see any erosion or damage. As well, Colorado Springs Utilities' wastewater lines survived. Often such lines are damaged in heavy flooding.

All of which underscores that stormwater projects do work, several Council members emphasized.

The Sand Creek project involved Utilities, the city Parks Department and the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority.

"This is an example of a regional partnership," Councilor Val Snider noted. Council is expected to formally advocate a regional approach to stormwater management at today's Council meeting, which begins at 1 p.m.

Meantime, here's the video.
