When Google Earth was released back in the dark ages of 2005, everyone was psyched about getting to view their exes’ houses from the comfort of their own La-Z-Boys.

Since then, it has become possible to view (arguably) more exciting things on the Internet in real-time, including locations all over the world, due to innovative video-streaming technology. A couple favorites here in the Springs include the giraffes and meerkats at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, whose cages contain webcams that stream live feeds on the zoo’s website. (Also popular is the Panda Cam at the San Diego Zoo, whose brief hiatus many were passionately mourning with the government shutdown.)

The point is that people really, really like to pop in on nature from their laptops. And now, you can call upon Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods whenever you like, thanks to a new webcam available at – accessible from a computer, tablet or smartphone.

At the time of my writing this, it is 4:15 p.m., and the sun is streaming in from the upper left-hand corner of the video feed, a wisp of cloud skating across the horizon. The terrain at the base of Pikes Peak is a deep, dark green and the mountains stack against each other in contrasting shades of grey.

I sit here at my desk, and it is somehow soothing to be reminded of what remains outside the office door. Whether you’re a current or past Colorado resident, or someone who simply appreciates a good view, it’s nice to know you can pay Pikes Peak a visit whenever you want — even if it’s not the same as titling your head back in awe at the real thing towering above. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: That is one damn sexy mountain.
