Beer: The Green Man cometh

As we discussed here a couple of months ago, beer sales at-large are either up or down depending on whether you're looking at the cheap mass-market stuff or the good craft stuff. And in the realm of that good craft stuff: Well, the future's so bright seemingly that we all need to be wearing some tinted beer goggles.

As envisioned by owners Scott and Petra Simmons, the beer hall will have upwards of 50 taps that will highlight everything from Colorado Springs breweries to small Denver outfits and other more rare and hard-to-come-by craft beers. 

"We should be the leader of craft taps in town, that's the goal," says Scott, noting of course Trinity Brewing Co.'s respectable selection as well as the recently expanded Brewer's Republic line-up. 

It's tentatively set to open in what's currently The Carter Payne Event Center at 320 S. Weber St., formerly the AME Church

As advertised on Green Man's website, look for a special preview on Saturday, Nov. 9 that will likely feature some guest breweries and beer samplings; details remain sketchy at this point.

But what's clear is that as of Jan. 1, 2014, Green Man will begin a five-year lease with the Garden of the Gods Gourmet, the current proprietor who turned the space into the pretty event space it is today.

Scott says he plans to build a central, horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle of the super-high-ceilinged room (what was once a worship hall). Pending city approval, there's also designs for a seasonal outdoor beer garden. As for a food component, the plan is to essentially partner with a couple of local food trucks who'd keep consistent hours at the site, à la Bierwerks and Rocky Mountain Brewery.  

Petra will fulfill more of the day-to-day oversight and management of Green Man, says Scott, while he continues to spend a good deal of his time with his nonprofit, the American Distance Project. He currently works with around 30 athletes who compete on both the national and international level, "anywhere from a mile to a marathon." 

Formerly, Scott spent more than 20 years as a college track-and-field coach, most recently at Charlotte, N.C.'s Queens University, a division two school where he worked for five years. He moved to Colorado Springs specifically because "it's the best place in the U.S. to train distance runners," for the altitude, proximity to the Olympic Training Center and many other factors, he says. 

A great and growing craft beer scene is not one of those other factors, which isn't at all to say that we aren't appreciative and excited to see him get it up and running as well.
