Colorado Springs women coming to TEDxMileHigh

Posted By on Mon, Nov 4, 2013 at 4:21 PM

As I sit here scanning over the lineup of speakers at this year's TEDxMileHigh event, I am awed, amazed and downright proud to call myself a Coloradan. This event showcases locals with innovative, powerful ideas to cultivate change in the community. This special event, TEDxMileHigh: Women I Values + Instincts, will feature 10 extraordinary women from across the state to give the "talk of their life."

On the lineup is Sara Volz, recent graduate of a Colorado Springs high school and freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying molecular biochemistry, who was recognized as the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search winner for her work to efficiently produce algae biofuels. In her "free" time, she is involved in musical theater, a vocal group and student research.

If this brief bio into the laundry list of accomplishments of this young woman didn't astound you as much as it did me, let's take a look at another local powerhouse in the lineup, Katherine Giuffre. She is an associate professor of sociology at Colorado College, author of two books and researcher specializing in social structures that foster creativity and innovation. Feeling proud yet?

This event will feature other awesome women from across our state who are making an impact in areas of science, sociology, artistry, health and education. These inspiring talks will revolve around the theme of values and instincts, drawing in a crowd of 700 like-minded people, creating the space for ideas to be shared. The event will be held on Nov. 16, at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts on the University of Denver campus.

If you're not already proud of this beautiful state we call home, get out there and hold your head high for these badass women who are making an impact and looking damn good doing it.
