A Black Friday madness alternative

Posted By on Tue, Nov 26, 2013 at 5:01 PM

The mall is my personal hell. Don’t get me wrong – I like shopping sometimes, but the mall is something else. It’s like all of the big corporate powerhouses got together to live in the same dorm, and the nametags on their doors are really just in-your-face advertisements.

So you can imagine how I feel about Black Friday. In a phrase: not great. It’s one bustling, shoving reminder of how much our culture has become dominated by consumerism. And I say that as someone who has my own tendency to over-consume.

The folks behind the documentary Growth Busters: Hooked on Growth think a reality check could be helpful. And for that reason, they will be streaming their film worldwide on Friday, encouraging people to skip the biggest shopping day of the year, stay home, relax with their families and tune in.

In a press release, co-producer and Colorado Springs activist Dave Gardner says, “We sing Christmas is ‘the most wonderful time of the year.’ But the holiday shopping season has become so commercialized it’s now ‘the most deadly time of the year’ for our children and the Earth.”

The movement encouraging shoppers to refrain from Black Friday madness is not entirely new: Adbusters magazine started calling it “Buy Nothing Day” back in 1992, trying to help turn over a new leaf for how we regard both the holidays and the rest of the year.

Viewers need to sign up to receive an invitation to watch the free film. Additionally, co-producers Gardner and Lynsey Jones will be available both during and after the screening for an online Q&A session. Go online to get the invitation and learn more about when it will be streaming where you are. (Colorado folks, we’re looking at 6 p.m.) The film will also be available to watch on Saturday, but the point is that you watch it on Black Friday because, hopefully, you're not shopping.
