What you'll see at the DAM's Modern Masters next year

Back in August I gushed about Modern Masters: 20th Century Icons from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery opening next March at the Denver Art Museum. The names alone were enough to get me atwitter (Kahlo, Pollock, Miro, Picasso), but now today, the DAM has sent out its press kit for  the exhibit, which includes images from some more works that are going to be in the show.

And they're awesome. See?

Naturally, I have something of an attachment to these images here. The first is simply too fun and unique not to love (and can I say, I've loved this for, like, ever.) The second is actually a big deal. It's one of Gauguin's most famous and beguiling works. Catch up on it here. And should you have any interest in Gauguin beyond this, try reading his strange memoir of his time in the South Pacific called Noa Noa. It's been described as a fever dream of his recollections; pretty much the same idea as "Spirit of the Dead": The Other, the tenebrous, the exotic. See some of the artwork Gauguin made for the book here.

Lastly, about the Dali, which isn't actually favorite, but will still make an incredible impact: A Dali in person is a whole different animal than a Dali otherwise. The man could paint a surface smoother than glass, and the effect somehow amplifies the vaguely sinister undercurrent present in all of Dali's works.
