If you’re looking for an opportunity to side-step the overwhelming commercialism that passes for holiday cheer, consider catching Joe Johnson tonight at Swirl, where the talented local singer-songwriter will be performing his album, A Cold Christmas Moon, in its entirety.

“I never even performed the whole thing last year,” says Johnson of the Christmas Eve 2012 release, “and don't plan on doing it in its entirety again after this one.”

There’s really just one catch: A Cold Christmas Moon isn’t actually a Christmas album; the title is taken from Woody Guthrie's "1913 Massacre," which he covers on it.

Johnson also does renditions of songs by other local musicians, including the Haunted Windchimes' "Swimming Through a Dream," Jason Miller's "O'Lyda" and Chauncy Crandall's "Justified Sins." Showtime is 8 p.m., with Curtis Boucher opening.
