Colorado Springs' only fetish club and art gallery is coming up on its one-year anniversary, and owner Paul Ulmer, who plays under the name Paul Thorns, is feeling just fine. More than 400 people have joined Voodoo Leatherworks, he says, and enjoyed some 14 events a month.

"The last year has been ... well ... nuts," he says today via Facebook. "Good, but nuts."

"Besides the fetish parties, we started up a series of art nights called 'No Pants Tuesdays.' [See our 2013 story on that event here.] These photo shoots have brought in a lot of talented artists and models to do some fairly risque' shoots that have included themes like Fetish Fairytales, Horror and tonight's Blasphemy shoot," Ulmer says.

"We've raised money for Urban Peak through Voodoo fundraiser parties; marched in the Colorado Springs PrideFest Parade; held a food drive for and conducted free HIV testing with the Southern Colorado AIDS Project (S-CAP), shipped thirteen boxes of food for Soldiers deployed overseas and consistently provided a venue for those of us who live a less conventional lifestyle; [and] whether they are kinksters, swingers, polyamorous or part of the GLBT community, a lot of different groups have started calling us 'home.'"

As for the April 1 anniversary (and April 5 party), Ulmer hopes to do "something monumentally big and ridiculous," but details are still to come. Either way, it's something to celebrate.

"I'll just say that everyone expected me to fail," he says. "Whether through a lack of interest in supporting a space like this ... or through conservative activism shutting us down. I'm really proud of our supporters and their efforts that keep us alive. Colorado Springs has a deliciously edgy underbelly ... and we're happy to support it."
