More on police guarding the mayor

Posted By on Wed, Apr 9, 2014 at 9:17 AM

City Councilor Helen Collins has raised questions about deployment of police officers, which you can read about in today's edition of the Independent.

We had asked the city about why officers are assigned to escort Mayor Steve Bach, but didn't hear back until late Tuesday afternoon after our press deadline.

In an e-mail, city communications director Cindy Aubrey writes:
A security officer assigned by the Colorado Springs Police Department will provide services upon request from the Mayor's Staff and, if manpower is available.

The types of events considered for a security detail include: Town Hall meetings, Spirit of the Springs events, City Council meetings, Press Conferences or any other community event.

Please note that the security officer is not strictly for Mayor Bach but the community as well should an incident/confrontation arise while at a public meeting or event.

This type of security is not out of the ordinary for a city our size. Appropriations for the position were made through City Council.

CSPD also provides security when requested from City Council at their events.
