Brilliant: More than just a name

What's a good party if it isn't also a spectacle?

Daisy McConnell gets it, and has such plans underway for GOCA's annual fundraiser gala Brilliant, which is slated for June 14. It will take place downtown at GOCA 121 on the patio (or inside, in case of rain).

Far more than your regular thank-the-donors with music and an auction, this year's Brilliant will feature large-scale screens airing seven channels of motion-based art (that's like video art, but with elements of animation and sound) from artists hailing from Colorado and the world over, including Ryan Trecartin, of this recent, glowing New Yorker piece, as well as Ivar Zeile, who will be veejaying.

(By the way, Zeile, along with Ryan Pattie, are the brains behind Denver's Friday Flash series, which blend experimental dining with immersive video art, McConnell says, having been suitably impressed by it last year.)

McConnell, via email, explains that she planned Brilliant to be an experience. In fact, it's like a one-night pop-up exhibit (both in spirit and in the amount of work put in to coordinate the entertainment, projectors and art). In addition to the screens, Ormao Dance Company will perform an original dance for the evening, local artist Wendy Mike is also creating a light and sculpture installation, and there will be an improvisational show from DJ Prominent, b-boy group Soul Mechanics and drummer Motown.

Factor in some specialty food and drink from Nosh and a pretty generous ticket price for what you're getting: just $40 for GOCA members and $45 for nonmembers. UCCS students with ID get in for only $25.
