Yesterday, the Association of Alternative Newsmedia — the trade organization that the Indy and almost all alt-weekly papers belong to, and our CEO Fran Zankowski is a recent president of — released its list of finalists for the 2014 AAN Awards.

These are big ones for the paper, as they pit us against our ilk on a national level. Last year saw editor Edie Adelstein win first place for arts criticism, as well as first place to the staff for breaking-news coverage of the Waldo Canyon Fire.

This time around we celebrate the fact that music editor Bill Forman and columnist John Hazlehurst are finalists for their work in the past year.

• Forman is being honored for his Oct. 9 piece "Tower of low power," which asked if pirate radio was ready to go legit:
If Gallup were to poll Americans on which government agencies they most hate, the FCC would almost certainly be among the Top 5. Established in 1934 as custodian of the public airwaves, the commission effectively reversed course with its deregulation of the broadcast industry in the late '80s and '90s, paving the way for corporate conglomerates like Clear Channel to put an end to local and regional radio.
• Hazlehurst, who also writes for our sister publication, the Colorado Springs Business Journal, is being honored for his column City Sage. Here's a cut from last week's, titled "FAC takes a different path":
For all the verbiage, there's one thing missing from [David] Dahlin's impressive skill set: the arts. He "considers himself an eclectic leader with diverse global experiences, and personal interests as an amateur musician, scientist, gardener, cook and philosopher," but he apparently has been detached from the city's arts community.

Asked whether Dahlin was a member of the FAC, Hall said, "I don't know. I don't think the search committee even asked that question."
The awards will be announced July 13 at the association's annual convention in Nashville.
