After decades of building our reputation as a breeding ground for unhinged reactionaries — from James Dobson's gay-baiting of fictional character SpongeBob Squarepants to Doug Lamborn's apology for calling Barack Obama a "tar baby" — Colorado Springs has only managed to rank #4 among “The Ten Most Conservative Cities in North America.”

The disappointing results of the joint study by academics at UCLA and MIT were published this morning by Raw Story. And while it’s no surprise that Mesa, Arizona came in first, there’s no excuse for being bested by Oklahoma City and Virginia Beach.

Wake up, people! Now is the time to up our game — and demand a recount.

Here are the rankings:

9. Tulsa, OK
10. Aurora, CO
