15 for 2015

I’m going to be that very annoying girl for a moment. You know the type: optimistic, bubbly and eager, the one that loves the turning of the New Year (I really, really do).

I love all of the clichés that a fresh start brings; I love hearing the resolutions of others, all of the optimism and hope, finding closure after a bad year or celebrating the successes of the best year yet. I love everything about the New Year to the point where it doesn’t bother me to listen to the “haters” talking about overcrowded gyms, resolutions that don’t work out, and how everybody and everything is/will be exactly the same as last year. The negativity doesn’t get to me.

I honestly believe that if you want to change your life, just buckle down and decide to do so. You can make that decision any day, no matter what time of year it is, it doesn’t make it any less meaningful to hope for change at the end of the year. It serves as a nice, natural point to cut off the past — sometimes an approaching deadline is what you really need to start thinking of real change.

You are humble, whole-hearted and strong — you can do anything you put your mind to.

Rather than starting into the dark chasm of losing 25 pounds — resenting the scale each and every day and stuffing cheeseburgers in your mouth to ease the pain — or any other drastic life change that seems impossible from day one, make a list of things that you CAN do this year. Take account of 15 reasonable changes you want to make in 2015; the fifteen for fifteen. Set goals that are reachable, but not too easy, and will improve your way of life. (Don’t include those that leave you feeling miserable, with an expensive diet.)

My own goals this year are more about finding enjoyment in the process of accomplishing them, not solely on the end result. I want to read three books per month and remind myself to make time for it. I want to write more, dedicating more time and effort and reduce the hours I spend binge-watching "Friends" on Netlifx. (That’s a deep hole to fall into.)

Some goals require even more work and dedication. I bought a house at the end of 2014 and I want to build and maintain a garden. (I’m sure my Google searches will be even more embarrassing than they already are.) I’m looking forward to the satisfaction of building something with my own two hands. To me, there are few better feelings than setting a goal and following it through to completion.

But even if I don’t accomplish everything on my list at the end of the year, I’ll still have met a few of my goals — that’s OK too. I’ll know I tried, and will have enjoyed taking the scenic route to get to where I want to go just as much as I would have arriving at the place I wanted to be. I’ll learn what things are and aren’t for me on the way.

This New Year I encourage you to do the same. Move. Go for that new job. Read the books you want, not just the ones you think you should. Exercise, take care of your body and get that new haircut. Spend your time on relationships that serve you and make you better. Whatever it is, just do it. Some will work out, others won’t; surprise yourself. Just take a risk and get to know the real you.

Celebrate the start of another year around the sun — we’re lucky to have made it this far.
