Monday, Ray Mark Rinaldi of the Denver Post wrote an expansive article on more detailed findings from the National Endowment for the Arts' recent arts engagement studies (which we discussed here). It shows that Colorado is the top state for theater, music and museum visits.

That's right. Almost 52 percent of Colorado adults reported attending live performing arts events, ahead of the 37.4 percent national average. Of visual arts events, 59.2 percent say they attended, ahead of 39 percent nationally. When broken down by category, Colorado nearly doubles the rate of the country as a whole for classical music, dance performances and non-musical plays.

According to the article, the NEA attributes such success to Colorado's high income and education levels, along with early childhood exposure to the arts.

Rinaldi's own reporting of Denver organizations shows that audiences are receptive to riskier endeavors. "The [Museum of Contemporary Art Denver] routinely sells out its Mixed Taste lecture series, even though it combines talks on such wacky topics as "Cave Painting & Tequila." The Colorado Symphony orchestra has found some of its greatest success performing music related to comic books and alternative music acts."

Good for us.
