Shell game in recall election

, in hot water over failing to disclose the source of funds for a petitioning effort to recall City Councilor Helen Collins, has finally filed a campaign finance report.

But it doesn't tell the public a thing.

The report states that Colorado Springs Government Watch Issue Committee received $14,122 from the "general treasury funds" of the Colorado Springs Government Watch. It spent that same amount on signature gathering by paying GOTV Canvassing, Tempe, Ariz., in three payments from Dec. 28 to Jan. 11.

So the question remains: Who's really behind the recall of Collins?

As stated in a letter to the editor in today's Independent, "Hiding in Plain Sight," CSGW has repeatedly cited goals of openness and accountability, but itself won't abide by that ethic in disclosing who its funders are. The organization is overseen by Dede Laugesen, wife of Wayne Laugesen, editorial writer at the Gazette, who lives in Monument.
