The scandal arising from the Colorado Republican Party Independent Expenditure Committee, as reported in-depth by the Colorado Statesman, makes the party look pretty bad, and it seems there will be a decision coming in March as to whether to audit the independent expenditure committee.

But it's worth noting that two entities in Colorado Springs gave to the IEC, those being The Broadmoor Hotel, Inc., which gave $5,000 in October, and W. Bruce Kopper of Kopper Investments, who gave $10,000 in August.

Broadmoor CEO Steve Bartolin says the hotel gave to the IEC with the idea it would support candidates who are pro-business. "Our money was used in Colorado campaigns," he says. "Our whole role is to get pro-business people in there [elected office]."

However, it's unclear how Bartolin and anyone else can be assured their donations supported candidates in Colorado. The issue is fully explained in the Statesman article.
