I decided to make some coffee soap for the first time and give them away as gifts for Mother’s Day. I didn’t want to deal with lye and I don’t have time to wait for them to cure, so I used the melt-and-pour base method. A melt-and-pour base is basically a plain pre-made soap base just waiting for customization usually by adding color, fragrance, and exfoliating additives, such as coffee grounds.

1 lb. melt-and-pour soap base
3.5-7 grams (or 1-2 tsp.) used coffee grounds
5-7 grams or ¼ fluid oz fragrance oil (optional)
Soap mold that can hold 1 lb. of soap base
Small spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol

1. Cut soap base into 1” cubes.
2. Place the cubes in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in the microwave on high for 40 seconds, stir, and heat again in 15-second intervals, stirring after each interval until the base is completely melted.
3. Immediately add and stir the coffee grounds (and fragrance oil if you’ll be using some) in order to keep the soap from cooling and hardening too fast.
4. Promptly pour the soap into the molds.
5. Pop any bubbles forming on top of the soap and lightly spray the top of the still liquid with the rubbing alcohol.
6. Let cool for 1 to 4 hours at room temperature, or according to the soap base directions.
7. Release the soap from the mold.
8. Decorate, wrap, or package your handmade soap as you like.

Benefits of making your own coffee soap:

1. You get a chance to upcycle your coffee grounds.
2. The soap exfoliates and softens your skin.
3. It removes odors from your hands such as onions, garlic and even fish smell.
4. No more fatty oils and grease off your hands.
5. It’s a unique homemade gift!
