Cowboy Star's affordable stable

Posted By on Wed, Jul 8, 2015 at 11:49 AM

In last week's Appetite column, Bryce Crawford noted the priciness of Cowboy Star, conceding at least that his Kobe beef skirt steak nearly killed him from pleasure.

Indy COO Carrie Simison can vouch for similar experiences in terms of the gustatory pleasure, but she's discovered the not-so-secret loophole around the sticker-shock factor.

It's called happy hour. It's a thing. Lots of places offer it. She says you should go, for half off: cocktails, wine, well spirits, draft beers, and small plates.

For example: Ballast Point's excellent Sculpin IPA and what she describes as a fantastic steak frites course only set her back $13.50 pre-gratuity.

And last night, she attended the first dinner in the Summer Collaboration Series with local breweries, featuring Red Leg Brewing Company (disclaimer: where she's occasionally seen guest bartending).

These four-course meals are a surprising $38 per head pre-tax/tip, below the going rate for many other drink-paired dinners around town. Heres a list of upcoming nights:

And from last night's dinner, here's a look at the menu:
