Early fall in Colorado is a beautiful time for photography and it's also a great time for families to get their pictures made in advance of the holidays.
Here are three reasons why you should pick up a camera, get outside and shoot pictures over the next four weeks. I can’t recommend taking pictures of your dog, your children, your spouse, your family or, heck, offer to help a friend out by photographing their family enough. You won’t be disappointed!
Fall Light
The quality and range of light in Southern Colorado is why so many artists live and work here. This time of year is especially nice because, as summer changes to fall, the sun gets lower in the sky. The late-day light, with its dramatic dramatic shadows and warm reds and yellows, gives your photographs added drama and pleasing skin tones.

Changing Leaves
The leaves are just beginning to change, and over the course of the next few weeks different foliage at different elevations will begin to change into brilliant reds and yellows. If you want catch the changing Aspens visit Mueller State park in the last week of September. The cottonwoods in Monument Valley Park begin to change in early October.
Indian Summer
Even after leaves have fallen, there’s a plenty of opportunities for pictures. Southern Colorado has a fifth season and it’s called Indian Summer. Indian summer is a brief respite from chilly November and typically runs from now and through the middle of October. There isn’t anything quite like Indian Summer – it’s such a sweet time of year and, for just a brief moment, it lulls you into thinking it will go on like this forever.
Here are some photographs of my good friends, the Adams’ family, taken in Monument Valley Park in the fall to illustrate just how lovely this time of year is for pictures.
