Body cams on the way to CSPD

As we reported last week, the Colorado Springs Police Department will soon be strapping on body cameras, thanks in part to the Justice Department, which just notified the city of its $600,000 grant to buy 500 body cams.

The city plans to outfit all officers who have direct contact with the public, or about 470 officers.

In a news release, the city said the CSPD was one of 73 law enforcement agencies, out of 285 applicants, that received grant funding for the body worn camera program, and the only one in the State of Colorado.

“The awarding of this grant to the Colorado Springs Police Department represents a significant step forward in reaching a stated goal for our city. By outfitting our officers with body cameras, we will enhance our ability to serve and protect both the citizens of our great city and the men and women at the CSPD,” Mayor John Suthers said in the release.

Suthers proposed 2016 budget includes the city's match of $600,000.

CSPD wants input from citizens to help develop the policies and procedures surrounding the use and deployment of the body worn cameras, the city said in the release, which, again, was reported by the Independent last week.

Residents may provide input by completing a survey here. The survey will be available on the Public Safety portion of the City of Colorado Springs website next week. A Spanish language version of the questionnaire is also available here.
