Subway pledges to go antibiotic-free with its meats

We rarely report on chain-restaurant news here, but certainly feel it's justified when a big carrot or stick is justified.

Today, a carrot goes to Subway, for announcing steps to go entirely antibiotic-free with its meat purveying, beginning with its chicken and turkey next year, followed by its beef and pork. 

Local activists have spoken out against the company, as we recently reported, and the Natural Resources Defense Council has been running an active campaign to encourage Subway to make just such a move. 

What with the whole Jared Fogle debacle, the company sure could use a victory. 

Subway follows in the footsteps of several other big-brand restaurant chains, basically pledging to take a stand against antibiotic resistance, which has become a huge human health concern.
