$6 million donated to get Springs Airport off the ground

  • Mayor Suthers is hoping to see more of these at the Colorado Springs Airport due to a $6 million donation.
The Anschutz Foundation, El Pomar Foundation and philanthropist Lyda Hill have donated a combined $6 million to get a fund started to help the Colorado Springs Airport attract more commercial flights, Mayor John Suthers told City Council today.

While asking for Council approval of his aviation enhancement fund, Suthers said the fund would be managed by the Pikes Peak Community Foundation and would allow individuals or foundations to donate. "It would be available for the airport to use for enticements or incentives to commercial aircraft companies to bring more frequent flights to Colorado Springs, larger planes to Colorado Springs and increase our commercial traffic."

Drawing more flights to the Springs is key to economic development, Suthers said.

He also announced the combined $6 million gift from the foundations and HIll, not specifying which entity gave how much.
