As promised the day after the Nov. 3 election, Mayor John Suthers has appointed a board to keep tabs on the expected $250 million to be raised with a new sales tax increase approved by voters.

Termed 2C, the measure will begin collecting .62 of a percent sales tax in Colorado Springs on Jan. 1. The tax money will be used to repair the city's crumbling roads and ends after five years, though Suthers has said he might ask voters to extend it another five years after that.

Members of the panel are:

Merv Bennett, City Council president
Barry Falkenstine, former chief of pavement analysis and design, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
Don Knight, City Council member
Barb Winter, executive Vvice president, Ent Federal Credit Union
Dave Zelenok, director of public works, City of Centennial, who formerly served as director of public works and director of transportation for the City of Colorado Springs

“The citizens of the City of Colorado Springs stepped up and made a commitment to move our city forward when they supported 2C,” Suthers said in a news release. “It is our goal to achieve this vast improvement of our road infrastructure in the most efficient and effective way possible, and to effectively communicate our progress to city residents. I’m confident that this panel will provide a level of expertise that will help us achieve both of these objectives.”

Through periodic meetings over the five-year life of 2C, the advisory committee will provide input on prioritization of projects, implementation of road improvement plans and the dissemination of information to the public.

No word on when or where the committee will meet for the first time.
