Olympic City USA effort launched

Mayor John Suthers told City Council today during an informal lunch he wants to launch a branding campaign that would label Colorado Springs as Olympic City USA.

As Suthers astutely observed, "It's a no-brainer." No doubt, considering the Springs is home to the U.S. Olympic Committee headquarters, the Olympic Training Center, many national governing bodies and, by early 2018, the Olympic Museum and Hall of Fame, to be built in southwest downtown.

"It can't be something a whole bunch of other cities can claim," Suthers noted. "It has to be something that sets us above."

He said a nonprofit will be formed under the umbrella agency Pikes Peak Community Foundation to accept contributions to the effort.

The effort, he said, will culminate with the opening of the museum in two years.

"The USOC is giving us broad permission to use Olympic City USA," he said, adding that the label of Olympic City of America wasn't allowed, because there are other "americas" on the continent.

Of course, Sue Skiffington-Blumberg, former communications director for the city, was wholeheartedly in favor of such an effort but was canned by Steve Cox just before Mayor Steve Bach took office in June 2011. Cox became Bach's chief of staff. Go figure.
