The Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb, Aug. 11, first race at 6:15 a.m., awards at 9 a.m., Pikes Peak, 5089 Pikes Peak Hwy., Cascade, $5-$15/person or $50/vehicle for spectators; $40-$80 for cyclists, coloradospringssports.org.
While many of us look up the magnificent face of Pikes Peak and consider it a bit too much to handle, still plenty of others see a physical challenge waiting to be conquered. Saturday’s Cycling Hill Climb offers opportunities for bikers of all ages and levels to tackle the mountain, with a competitive race and a Gran Fondo Fun Ride. Bikers will follow the same route that the International Hill Climb (for motorists) has been using since 1916 — 20 kilometers with a climb of more than 4,700 feet. For the first time, the competitive race will be the final challenge in the Colorado Summit Series, a newly formed group of three cycling races. Not a biker? No problem; spectators are welcome to enjoy the festival area, which is also the starting line for the race. In addition to browsing a few vendors set up for your perusal, you can stick around for the award ceremony at 9 a.m., honoring the cyclists who just busted their wheels on that slope. Remember, racers must pre-register.
