Last December, it was the DIY music space Flux Capacitor that reluctantly closed its doors; tonight, on New Year's Eve, the same will likely happen with the Triple Nickel Tavern, a downtown bar and venue that’s played an integral role in keeping the punk, metal and straight-ahead rock scenes alive in Colorado Springs since December of 2005. The announcement comes just two weeks after a two-night celebration of the venue’s 12th anniversary.

“Tomorrow will most likely be the 555’s last day,” announced owner JJ Grueter Saturday on his Facebook page. “To make a long story short, I got sued a few years ago and it drained me of everything I had. Although I’ve kept the bar afloat, I’ve never been able to recover. I got behind on taxes and, as you know, once that happens it’s really hard to climb out of that hole. As much as it tears me apart, I have exhausted all my resources. 12 years is a pretty good run. So come down tonight or tomorrow and have a drink, a laugh and give me a hug.”

Tonight’s New Year’s Eve show will feature performances by Minneapolis bands Gramma and Heart to Gold, Denver’s Creek, and additional as-yet-unnamed acts. Find details at
