The current president of the United States might want us to believe that those who take to the streets to protest his regime are unpatriotic. He calls those football players who kneel for the anthem disrespectful to the flag, and claims those who stand against him are standing against America. But putting blind faith in the government is the least patriotic thing a free nation can do, and standing up for ourselves — our own rights and the rights of our neighbors — proves our love for what this country could be, rather than thoughtless devotion to the broken system it is.

So instead of using the Fourth of July to celebrate empty symbols of freedom, we've put this playlist together to remind ourselves that protest is patriotic. Hopefully, these songs spanning decades of resistance (from 2Pac to Against Me! to local punk rockers Cheap Perfume) can keep us going in what is sure to be a long, long fight.

Happy Fourth of July.
