I usually blast Jungle while I’m cleaning my house. Their tunes are perfect get-down-and-deep-clean-the-tub motivation: upbeat, dance-y, almost singable. Recently, as I listened to their sophomore album For Ever (XL Recordings) — I found the soul collective’s sound still rang true. The new full length doesn't hold out on a few surprising changes devoted fans continue stick around for.

One of those surprises is the moody, psychedelic ballad “House in LA” chronicling the story of For Ever’s trek through devastating heartbreak and materialism in a glittering, big city. The single came out a few months ago and originally didn’t appeal to Jungle’s aesthetic, but in the epic scheme that is For Ever, the song’s experimentation in crescendoing strings and low and slow percussion suddenly makes sense.

“Pray,” another experimental track on the album, is a glamorous Hollywood anthem adapted to today's new age — if sultry bass doesn’t get you bopping along, nothing will. The tale of a dramatic Hollywood love affair continues into groovy singles Smile and Beat 54 (All Good Now), giving die hard fans resounding reminders of why they fell in love with Jungle in the first place.

An ensemble of voices is what continues to push Jungle ahead of standard band set ups. Many diverse talents orchestrate the sound that allows Jungle to play with depth on this album. From disco nights choruses to the elegant horns, For Ever tests the waters, but still gives lovers of their self-titled album that infectious funky flow at the coattails of a hot summer season.

Jungle will be hitting up Boulder Theater Sunday September 30th. A can’t-miss live performance. Anticipate leaving the venue sweaty and sore.
