The Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education selected Michael Thomas, chief of academics for Minneapolis Public Schools, as its new superintendent. Thomas will replace Nicholas Gledich, who plans to retire this month.

Thomas was one of two finalists for the position, the other being Joel Boyd, an instructional chief at Boston Public Schools. The school district held a public interview with the two candidates last week.

Thomas has also served as chief of Minneapolis Public Schools, and as associate superintendent in that same district, according to a statement from District 11. Before that, he worked at Osseo Area Schools in Minnesota, where he held various roles: district coordinator for equity and integration, elementary school principal, and secondary school principal. Thomas began his career as an elementary school-level social worker.

The district's statement notes that the job offer "is contingent upon successful negotiations, which will also include an official start date."
