Noting that El Paso County has led the state in traffic deaths — 77 in 2017 and 81 last year, the Sheriff’s Office announced on April 30 it will beef up enforcement.

As of May 1, deputies will work in conjunction with other public safety agencies to target certain areas in order to deter and change “unlawful, dangerous and even deadly traffic behaviors,” the office said in a release.

“Every two months we will be posting the areas of our targeted enforcement,” the release said. “These areas will be selected based on data gathered by our SMART trailer, traffic complaints and traffic crash data provided by the Colorado State Patrol.”

Sheriff Bill Elder said in the release the first goal is to gain voluntary compliance, but barring that, “we rely on traffic enforcement.”
