In January, Gov. Jared Polis ordered the Department of Public Health and Environment to develop rules requiring car manufacturers to supply car dealers with a certain number of electric vehicles. The initiative is called the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) program.

But before setting requirements, state officials sought to reach a voluntary agreement to increase the number of available electric vehicles in the state.

On June 4, the officials announced that effort was unsuccessful.

So now, the state is moving forward with setting hard guidelines for electric vehicles.

The Air Quality Control Commission will hold a rulemaking hearing in August. Should they choose to adopt the new standards, they could go into effect as soon as October.
