Armor Correctional Health Services Inc., of Miami, which provides medical services at the Criminal Justice Center, has given notice it will pull out of its five-year contract effective at year’s end, several years early. The Gazette first reported the cancellation. Armor was hired at a higher cost in mid-2017 to succeed Correctional Healthcare Management Inc. of Greenwood Village. Armor has since met with criticism — from the Sheriff’s Office and from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, which placed the CJC on probation in late 2017 due to shortfalls in providing health care. The jail has been plagued by deaths, serious injuries and lack of care, inmates and their attorneys have said in legal claims.

Armor said in a May 9 letter to Sheriff Bill Elder that it inherited problems from CHM and cited the Office’s “unwillingness to work in a collaborative manner” and a relationship that is “irreversibly damaged” in withdrawing from the contract.
